Playtest Moderator & Synthesist

What you’ll do

You’ll recruit (or coordinate) players, run structured remote playtests, and turn messy table moments into clear, actionable reports that help designers move from “hmm” to “here’s the fix.”

  • Plan and moderate sessions in TTS/Tabletopia (goals, scripts, timers, bias checks).
  • Keep the table steady: guide talkative players, make space for quieter ones, keep things on-scope.
  • Capture artifacts: recordings, chat logs, timestamped observation notes.
  • Compile a tight synthesis: top findings, supporting evidence, and next-step recommendations.
  • Track simple metrics across iterations (what’s improving, what’s slipping, what reverted).
  • Collaborate with designers to scope the next sprint or follow-up test.
  • Work remotely with a stable connection, decent mic, and a reasonably quiet space.

What you bring

  • Experience leading at least ~15 playtest, usability, or research sessions (tabletop, RPG, digital, or UX).
  • Comfortable operating TTS and/or Tabletopia; calm, grounded table presence.
  • Strong writing: you can separate noise from signal and explain why it matters to the design.
  • Reliability: you show up on time, hit agreed timelines, and communicate if something slips.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with Airtable/Notion, OBS, and simple whiteboard tools (Miro/FigJam).
  • Experience testing economy loops, pacing, downtime, or teach flow in games.
  • Any background in research methods (user research, QA, psychology, education, etc.).

Compensation

  • Freelance, per-project or hourly, depending on scope.
  • Please include your preferred rate range and approximate weekly capacity in your application.

We’re happy to work with folks who have other clients, as long as expectations stay clear.

How to apply

Submit the following via the application form:

  • Portfolio or sample synthesis (PDF or link).
    • If you don’t have a formal report, send a 1–2 page breakdown of a recent playtest you ran.
  • Brief note (150–250 words) on your approach to reducing bias in playtests.
  • Availability and time zone, plus your typical turnaround for a 2-session study.

We strongly welcome applicants from underrepresented groups in tabletop, game design, and research.
