What you’ll do
You’ll turn rough game components into clean, readable prototype assets and print-and-play files that make it easier to test, teach, and iterate.
- Create clear layouts for cards, boards, mats, player aids, and tokens using provided content.
- Design simple, functional iconography and visual systems (not final illustration) to support rules and state.
- Build prototype-ready files for both:
- Tabletop play (print-and-play PDFs, cut sheets), and
- Digital play (asset exports suitable for TTS / other platforms).
- Apply basic accessibility good practices (contrast, font size, hierarchy, redundancy between icon/text).
- Keep typography and visual language consistent across all components.
- Prepare organized, layered source files so designers can update values and text without rebuilding from scratch.
- Work from design briefs, sketches, spreadsheets, or messy screenshots and turn them into clean prototype layouts.
- Communicate clearly about constraints (print margins, token sizes, file weights, etc.) and suggest practical solutions.
What you bring
- Experience designing for print, UI, or similar: you’re comfortable laying out information-dense content.
- Proficiency in at least one layout/vector tool (e.g., Affinity, InDesign, Illustrator, Figma, or similar).
- Strong sense for clarity and hierarchy: you know how to make the “right” information pop at the table.
- Familiarity with modern board games and the kinds of components they use.
- Ability to follow a style guide or create a lightweight one when needed.
- Reliable communication, file handoff, and respect for deadlines.
Nice to have
- Prior experience with board game prototypes, PnP files, or TTS asset packs.
- Basic understanding of accessibility in tabletop (color blindness, legibility, information load).
- Comfort preparing assets for digital tables (cropping, padding, export settings, naming conventions).
- Experience working with AI-assisted visuals, with a focus on transparency and easy replacement later.
- Light familiarity with tools like Google Sheets/Airtable for pulling in card data.
Compensation
- Freelance, remote role.
- Per-project or hourly, depending on scope (number of components, formats, and revisions).
- Please share your preferred rate range and an estimate of how many hours/projects you can take on per month.
How to apply
Submit the following via the application form:
- 3–6 samples of relevant work (prototypes, UI, PnP files, information-dense layouts, etc.).
- A short note (150–250 words) on how you think about clarity and usability in prototype components.
- A brief list of tools you use (layout/vector software, any automation or data-merge workflows).
- Your time zone, typical availability, and whether you prefer per-project or hourly work.
If you haven’t worked on board game prototypes yet, focus on work that shows you can organize complex information clearly and adapt to a new format.
